This intense scrutiny continued even after the break-up of the Beatles. Moreover, Lennon and Ono attracted even more attention by taking very public positions on the social issues of the day. The group had had such an impact on the times that each word and action was analyzed for its meaning. The group was idolized by millions and the press shined a spotlight on everything they did. “After all, the two are really one” he would write much later in the song “Dear Yoko”.īut the Beatles were the subject of intense public scrutiny. He felt that they indeed were soul mates. Lennon, however, did not find what he was looking for until he met Yoko Ono. You can also see it in his need for close friendships such as with his fellow Beatles. In his music, you can see elements of loneliness and trace his search for love. However, she was killed not long afterwards when she was struck by an automobile while crossing the street. Eventually, his mother re-entered his life, and the two became very close. His mother, unable to raise the boy by herself, sent him to live with her sister in suburban Liverpool. His father left to work on the ships that sailed out of Liverpool and never returned. Lennon did not have the happiest of boyhoods. In order to appreciate the role of Bermuda in the story, it is necessary to look a little further at John Lennon, the man. In short, it is not too much to say, they changed the course of history. Essentially, four young men emerged from Liverpool, England in the early 1960s and in just a few years changed not only popular music but also social attitudes and the way people live. The story of The Beatles is too well known to go into detail. What was it about this small archipelago in the Atlantic that so inspired Lennon? Moreover, can visitors to Bermuda, particularly cruise visitors, still find the traces of that inspiration? “I was so centered after the experience at sea,” he told an interviewer, “all these songs came, after five years of nothing, no inspiration, no thought, no anything, then vroom, vroom, vroom!” A voyage there in 1980 inspired Lennon to resume song writing and the result was some of the best work of his solo career. However, another place that played a significant role in Lennon’s life was Bermuda. Together, however, they have concocted an act that's more theatrically cute than it is musically coherent. When one thinks of John Lennon, the founder of The Beatles, you think of Liverpool, London and even New York City. All three members of the group, especially Wendy, a clear- voiced soprano, have distinct talents. To this outsider, the cozy interdependency between the group and its cult came at the expense of the music. The Bermuda Triangle's vociferous cult following resembled an audience at ''The Rocky Horror Show'' as they responded on cue to signals from the stage. Their first set on Saturday included a stomping square dance rendition of the Charlie Daniels hit, ''The Devil Went Down to Georgia,'' a psychedelic garage band arrangement of the Styx song, ''Come Sail Away,'' and a chaotic audience participation rendition of ''Orange Blossom Special.'' The trio, whose members go simply by their first names - Roger, Wendy and Sam - include an electric autoharpist, a bass player and a drummer who also plays the fiddle, and everything they do is calculatedly weird. One could easily imagine that the club was a Berkeley coffee house, circa 1967, when the end of the folk music boom began intermingling with psychedelic rock. WATCHING the Bermuda Triangle, the zany rock-blue grass trio who performed at Folk City on Saturday night, was like being caught in a time warp.
