What I Don’t Like: The app failed to find some large, old files. A choice of cleaning all cookies or just malicious cookies. Most scans were quite fast - just seconds. What I Like: The app can free up gigabytes of space on your hard drive. If you have lots of available space and your Mac is running well, then don’t bother. But if you’re desperate to free up some storage space and don’t trust the freebies, then MacClean is good value, and I recommend it. Is MacClean for you? If you’re serious about maintaining your Mac and want the best-in-class tools, then you may be better off with CleanMyMac X. That makes it a contender for those who want to free up hard drive space while holding on to some cash. ![]() The price starts at $29.99 which is significantly lower than some of its competitors. I was able to free up 35GB on my Mac, which is significant. It can also scan for malware and addresses a number of minor privacy issues. It does this by running a series of scans to remove unnecessary system files and saved internet rubbish. None.IMobie MacClean is a pretty good app for freeing up hard disk space on your Mac. In short, they provide no protection at all. There are no viruses to detect, and any Trojans will go right past them. Remove any AV software you have installed. There is literally no way for anyone to know what is on yours, or anyone else's computer through a web browser. Web sites (such as the one you were at) that claim your computer has xxx viruses and you have less than xxx minutes before permanent damage occurs (and other variations) are all 100% lies. You must choose to install an attachment, or follow a bogus link to a scam site. Unlike Windows, you can't get infected just by opening an email. It doesn't need to ask you again for what you weren't expecting. Once you enter your admin password to install the package, everything gets installed. Criminals can add any software they want to an installer for Photoshop, Mathematica, or other illegal, cracked software the user thinks they're getting for free. Illegal software from P2P, file sharing or pirates sites.What they aren't is any type of message from Adobe. These are usually adware, but they can be anything. A pop-up from a web site that claims you need to install a Flash update.How do you get them? These are the common suspects: Such as back doors, key loggers and ransomware. Some only annoying (adware), and others that are much worse. All kinds of things fall under that banner. It cannot get on your computer by itself. A Trojan is any software the user must install in some way. Trojans are the number one way criminals attack Mac users.
